Advertisement for the Model Farm at Kinnereth

This advertisement is a likely source for Bloom's imagined promised land: Agendath Netaim at the Model farm at Kinnereth.  Interestingly, as S. Tolkowsky points out in his essay "The Jews and the Economic Development of Palestine,” the climate in Palestine was not conducive to successfully raising cattle.  Joyce probably refers to this advertisement because it uses heifers, which correspond to the butcher shop where Bloom is reading the ad.  It further peaks Bloom's interest because he used to work as a clerk at a cattlemarket.  The scene depicted in the advertisement is idyllic and looks more like it was painted in a European setting than a Middle Eastern one.
